Terrain is a new seed stage investment firm from Eric Stromberg and Willem Van Lancker.
We back founders who call their shot. We then work with them to forge a path between today’s reality and their goals for the future.
How do you work with portfolio companies?
We work closely with founders during the first year — not forever — as they set the foundation of their company. We most often refer to this as the assembly phase, and it is the step many of the most ambitious companies navigate well before they launch or pursue product/market fit.
We don’t offer a menu of services or a buffet of ex-executives on call. When we invest, you work with both Eric and Willem. We match your energy, creativity, and intensity. Together, we deliver both strategic and hands-on outputs across product, design, strategy, and sales.
Prior to our investment, we will invite you to speak to founders we have worked with previously and learn more about how we work with companies.
How do you work with companies beyond the first year ?
Selectively. Our collaboration typically culminates around a milestone — a launch, closing pilot customers, or a fundraise. From there we support you in selecting new partners and step back while continuing to be supportive on a more ad hoc basis.
This is to ensure we can continue to provide new founders with the best experience possible.
What companies have you invested in?
We have made 6 investments since forming Terrain, including Base Power. We will share more on the others in the coming months, but they include areas such as developer platforms, crypto, longevity, AI infrastructure and robotics.
Our past venture and/or personal investments include Flock Safety, Check, Lattice, the Browser Company, Figma, Built Robotics, Homebase, Plaid, Cadence, and more.
How many investments do you plan to make each year?
About 10. We plan to scale this number over time.

We lead rounds or can collaborate alongside others.
